THE OLD CONSTITUTION

THE GEM OF THE OCEAN

Words by E. Curtis Hine, USN ~ Music arranged by N. P. Curtiss

Home of the brave! whose flag doth wave, Its rustling fold on high,

Where ocean's tempests wildly rave And surges wash the sky!

Bright glorious Fame hath wed thy name, And Freedom points her hand

Begem'd with glit'ring stars to thee, Pride of our own green land!

Then let us cheer the bark so dear,

And may she be for aye

As now, the haughty tyrant's fear.

              Huzza!  Huzza!  Huzza!

              Huzza!  Huzza!  Huzza!

Gem of the sea! thy course shall be To vict'ry onward still,

To fight the battles of the free, And thwart  the tyrant's will!

Thy iron side hath of defied The fiery storm of war,

And heroes on the decks have died, From home and kindred far.

              Then let us cheer, etc.

Hope of the free! thy name shall be The magic rallying cry,

When clouds of war sweep o'er the sea, And dim our peaceful sky!

And though the spirits brave and true Who guided thee of  yore,

Have pass'd away and sleep in death, Columbia still has  more!

              Then let us cheer, etc.
